The power of UPRN: Simplifying address management and unlocking data insights

But what is a UPRN? What can it tell you about an address? And is it the most effective way to gain property data? Let’s take a look.

What is a UPRN?

A UPRN is a unique 12-digit identifier that’s given to every address in the GB, providing data to set it apart from other addresses. It can be assigned to anything from a house to a bus station, and this unique reference stays with its assigned address from the moment of planning right through to if the property is eventually demolished. You can, essentially, think of it as a National Insurance card for properties.

Having access to UPRNs enables organisations to make better informed decisions when it comes to the services they offer. This is open source data, and it saves businesses, who are trying to work their way through a mountain of differently formatted address data, time.

Who creates UPRNs?

Ordnance Survey (OS) and local authorities work together to create a UPRN for each new addressable location.

Benefits of UPRNs

UPRNs make address management simpler due to the fact that they provide a standardised way of referring to addresses. Often, address data comes in a variety of formats and naming conventions depending on where it’s come from, but UPRNs all appear in the same format, removing issues of ambiguity.

UPRNs allow you to identify a property, link address data across multiple datasets, and share standardised data, reducing the risk of errors.

UPRNs are used across many industries that deal directly with address data – such as construction, property development and real estate – but they can also be useful for retailers and public service organisations, as they provide a consistent reference point, and allow businesses and organisations to find out key information about an addressable location, and leverage this information to make better informed decisions.

What if you could get more insight into an address?

While UPRNs are incredible when it comes to giving some history of a property, and provide a means of sharing and managing standardised address data, that’s, roughly, the extent of their power. However, it is possible to get address data that will allow you to gain so much more insight into a property and its surrounding area.

We live in a world that’s driven by data, so imagine what you could achieve if you had over 400 data attributes for every address you wanted to search.

LANDLAN’s location intelligence solution can tell you everything from the number of access points on a property to the terrain it’s built on. It can provide valuable insight into environmental factors, such as wind speed and flood risk, as well as how much a property is worth, amenities in the local area, crime rate, socio-demographic, and so much more.

The benefits? Having access to a mountain of address data can arm you with the ability to make the best possible decisions for your business and your customers, and it can help you boost your marketing efforts, and overcome costly errors caused by poor data in your systems.
